What causes dry rot?
Dry rot typically occurs when airborne spores contact damp timber with a moisture content of over 20%. Once contact is made, these spores germinate and grow into mycelium which covers timber in a thick cotton-wool-like substance. This substance then eats the wood and removes the moisture from it, then it advances into a sporophore (fruiting body) which generates more spores and continues the lifecycle.
